I was awaked to Tannis barking and the smell of thick black smoke filling the cabin. It was coming from the pot-bellied stove in the living room, in a daze I managed to get a few clothes on. The fire was in the living room, a chimney fire and all he could see in the dark was a portion of the red-hot melted stovepipe with flames shooting up from the stove and down from the chimney. I filled a pail of water, opened the door on the stove and threw the pail full into the stove. A cloud of steam filled the room and belched out a putrid smell of wet ashes as well as burnt skin. My bare hand throbbed as it was badly burnt. Pail after pail of water went into the stove before it stopped burning.
