This publication is based upon a interview held in 2011 with Errie Ball, the last living participant in the inaugural Masters golf tournament held in 1934. Mr. Ball, 100 years old, was interviewed at the Willoughby Golf Club in Stuart, Florida, where he resides. Born in Wales, Mr. Ball played in the 1926 British Open at the age of 15. As a club pro, he qualified for 20 United States Opens and 18 Professional Golfers' Association Championships (PGA'a). In 1930, he began an apprenticeship as a golf professional at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, the home course of Bobby Jones. He still teaches golf from time to time at Willoughby. During the interview, Mr. Ball discussed the swings of Bobby Jones and Sam Snead, the change from wooden to steel shafts, his conception of the golf swing, what he stresses in teaching his students, and how the swing has changed.
